OFFICE WORKERS: REDUCE COMMON SITTING RISKS

We are spending longer hours behind our screens in lean positions. Have you ever considered the negative impacts and risks to our health?

Lean behaviour in office workplaces is a risk factor for cardio-metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, coronary artery disease, musculoskeletal disorders, some types of cancer, and premature death.

What is the Research Saying?

Excessive sitting is a risk factor for many adverse health outcomes. One study aimed to survey the prevalence of sitting behaviour and its adverse effects among office workers.

The respondents spent an average of 6.29 hours of an 8-hour working shift in a sitting position. The results showed that 48.8% of the participants did not feel comfortable with their workstations, and 73.6% felt exhausted during the workday.

Additionally, 6.3% suffered from hypertension, and 11.2% reported hyperlipidemia. The results also showed that neck (53.5%), lower back (53.2%), and shoulder (51.6%) symptoms were the most prevalent problems among office workers.

The study concluded that sitting behaviour had adverse effects on office workers, and active workstations are therefore recommended to improve working conditions.

What Can We Do About This?

Sit-to-stand workstations are becoming common in modern offices and are increasingly being implemented in interventions to reduce sedentary behaviour. These workstations can help mitigate health concerns such as musculoskeletal discomfort, which may reduce low back pain and improve work productivity among workers.

Workstation use and health benefits are maintained or improved over longer periods. Sit-stand workstations may offer health benefits for a large proportion of the working population and economic benefits for organisations through enhanced employee health and well-being.
